what this country needs. as far as obama goes, i was leaning toward obama before the debate, but i miss obama. i do not know where he went. in 2008, obama talked to the people. people could relate to what he was saying. he understood where he wanted to go with his ideas. last night, where was he? who was he talking to? i think i am a pretty intelligent person, but i missed half of what he was saying. he needed to talk to his voters. he needed to stand up to romney. when romney said things that were obviously not true, obama needed to tell the people. i did not hear that. i am is still undecided. i would like to hear more of obama refuting, if he can, what romney is saying. i would like to hear more of mitt romney's plan that if obama is not telling the truth about your plans, we need to hear where his plans are going to take us and how he is going to actually make them work. host: that was virginia from florida. david is a mitt romney supporter in arlington, virginia. what did you think about the debate? caller: i am a reluctant romney supporter because of the abomination of the last fo

romney to have a great debate, but president obama needs to make a mistake. you can be sure he's going to be guarding himself against. the biggest danger for obama is that he has the most to lose here because the election seems to be going his way. and therefore, if he's too cautious he will look too laid back and might let romney, who can be ferocious in these things, as we saw in the newt gingrich debate. but there's so much damage to undo about himself for romney before he gets to obama. the 47% comment and the whole image of somebody who doesn't care about the middle class and only the rich. he has to use the debate to repair that and only then can he pivot to obama, which is why he needs a long strategy. >> the last point is right. it's a difficult match between the venue, the medium in that debate and what he needs to accomplish, which is about seeming like a guy who cares about the middle class. there's ways to do that in ads and staging and all sorts of other things. hard when you're standing next to the president. but that's the distance he needs to to go. e.j.dionne, great to

as they have done in the last week. president obama is a great debater. the way i recall it, brooke, in the last presidential campaign, debates were not president obama's strengths. in fact, he's a much better speechmaker than he is a debater. and don't forget, he hasn't debated an awful lot lately. when the president of the united states and you're in the oval office, people tend not to debate with you an awful lot. you live in the presidential bubble. he hasn't been on stage with other people challenging him. so in a way, he sort of has got to get used to this routine over and over again, where as mitt romney has been on a debate stage an awful lot of times. >> if i recall, you were in a lot of those debates, he's tough, he's no wallflower that mitt romney. what is his biggest challenge, though? going into wednesday? >> the biggest challenge, i think mitt romney has got to do a couple of things. they're at odds with each other. first thing goehe's got to do i take on president obama directly when it comes to policy. what he has to tell the voters is i've got a better plan for an e
